Cell Migration Monitoring

Cell migration monitoring is the systematic observation and measurement of how cells move through a biological environment, providing insight into tissue organization, development, wound repair, and disease progression. Researchers typically use time-lapse microscopy to record cell movement and image-analysis methods to track position, speed, directionality, persistence, and interactions with neighboring cells or extracellular structures. In biology, these measurements help reveal how chemical signals, adhesion, cytoskeletal remodeling, and environmental conditions regulate migration. The approach supports studies of embryonic development, immune responses, cancer invasion, and tissue regeneration, while enabling quantitative comparisons of migratory behavior across cell types or experimental treatments.

2013

Tracking of cells using MRI has gained remarkable attention in the past years. This protocol describes the labeling of dendritic cells with fluorine (19F)-rich particles, the in vivo application of these cells, and monitoring the extent of their migration to the draining lymph node with 19F/1H MRI and 19F MRS.

A CFSE-Based Assay to Monitor Skin Dendritic Cell Migration to Draining Lymph Nodes in Infected Mice

This video demonstrates an assay for monitoring dendritic cell migration following footpad infection with Mycobacterium bovis Bacille Calmette-Guérin BCG in mice. Upon bacterial infection, activated skin DC cells are labeled with a cell-permeable carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester (CFSE) dye. After a suitable interval for DC migration to the popliteal draining lymph node, the node cells are isolated and subjected to immunostaining for DC-specific surface markers. Identification of...

An Introduction to Cell Motility and Migration

2023

Cell motility and migration play important roles in both normal biology and in disease. On one hand, migration allows cells to generate complex tissues and organs during development, but on the other hand, the same mechanisms are used by tumor cells to move and spread in a process known as cancer metastasis. One of the primary cellular machineries that make cell movement possible is an intracellular network of myosin and actin molecules, together known as “actomyosin”, which creates a...

Co-Culturing Glioblastoma Cells on Patterned Neurons: A Technique to Monitor the Migration of Glioblastoma Cells on Rat Hippocampal Neurons In Vitro

2025

This video describes a co-culture assay of glioblastoma cells on micropatterned neurons, which mimic the myelinated neuronal tracts invasion by the glioblastoma stem-like cells as they migrate on neurons in the peritumoral spaces. This assay can help analyze the effects of pharmacological drugs that inhibit glioblastoma cells' migration on neurons in a glioma.
