Cerebral Hemisphere

A cerebral hemisphere is one of the two major divisions of the cerebrum, the brain region responsible for higher functions such as perception, voluntary movement, language, and memory. Each hemisphere contains a folded cerebral cortex overlying white matter, and the two sides communicate through nerve fibers in the corpus callosum while often controlling movement and processing sensation from the opposite side of the body. Studying hemispheric organization, including functional lateralization and interhemispheric communication, helps biologists and clinicians interpret behavior, brain imaging, neurological disorders, and the effects of localized brain injury.

Cerebral Hemispheres

The human brain, a complex organ, is functionally divided into two cerebral hemispheres—left and right. These hemispheres are interconnected by a structure of paramount importance, the corpus callosum. This substantial bundle of neural fibers is not just a bridge between the hemispheres but a crucial element for the brain's comprehensive functioning. It enables efficient communication between the two hemispheres, allowing each side of the brain to control and receive sensory and motor...

We applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the unilateral hemisphere of rat brain, by placing a 25-mm figure-8 coil 1 cm lateral to the vertex on the biauricular line and angulating the coil by 45°. An in-house water cooling system was used for rTMS for more than 20 min.

Ex utero Electroporation and Whole Hemisphere Explants: A Simple Experimental Method for Studies of Early Cortical Development
