Collagen Coated Discs

Collagen-coated discs are laboratory substrates covered with collagen, an extracellular matrix protein, to provide cells with a biologically relevant surface for attachment and growth. The coating presents collagen binding sites that interact with cell-surface receptors, including integrins, promoting adhesion and influencing cell spreading, morphology, and behavior under controlled culture conditions. In biology and biomaterials research, these discs support studies of cell adhesion, migration, differentiation, and responses to engineered surfaces. They also provide a practical platform for comparing substrate properties, optimizing cell culture conditions, and evaluating how extracellular matrix signals affect cellular function.

2023

Collagen is another widely used biomaterial that has found popularity in commercial applications, such as photography. Collagen has more recently been used in tissue engineering applications, by creating hydrogels that provide structure to engineered tissue. This video introduces collagen as a biomaterial, demonstrates how it is harvested from porcine skin, and shows how the material is used to create a hydrogel for tissue engineering applications. Finally, several applications of the material...

Whole organ culture of the intervertebral disc (IVD) preserves the native extracellular matrix, cell phenotypes, and cellular-matrix interactions. Here we describe an IVD culture system using mouse lumbar and caudal IVDs in their functional spinal units and several applications utilizing this system.
