Contact Inhibition

Contact inhibition is a biological regulatory process in which cells reduce movement or proliferation when they encounter neighboring cells, helping organize tissues and maintain appropriate cell density. In contact inhibition of proliferation, cell-cell adhesion and changes in cytoskeletal organization alter signaling pathways that control the cell cycle, so crowded cells enter a quiescent state; loss of this response can permit continued growth. Researchers study contact inhibition in cultured cell monolayers to assess tissue organization, wound repair, and cancer-associated abnormalities. Its disruption provides a useful model for understanding how altered cell communication contributes to tumor development and growth-control failure.

Feedback Inhibition

Biochemical reactions are occurring constantly in cells, converting starting substances to different products, usually with the help of enzymes that speed the reactions. Without enzymes, it would take far too long for most reactions to occur to be useful to the cell! Since enzymes help control the rate of reactions, their activity is regulated so that appropriate amounts of starting materials, intermediate metabolites, and products are maintained in the cell. Excessive build-up or depletion of...

When a solid is dipped inside a liquid, the liquid surface becomes curved near the contact. For some solid–liquid interfaces, the liquid is pulled up along the solid, while for others, the liquid surface is convex or depressed near the solid surface. This phenomenon can be explained using the concept of cohesive and adhesive forces. The adhesive force is the molecular force between molecules of different materials, that is, between the molecules of the solid and the liquid. The cohesive force...

Intercellular Communication in a Contact-Free Co-Culture of Neurons and Oligodendrocytes

Begin with a contact-free co-culture of neurons and oligodendrocytes.A permeable membrane separates the neurons in the transwell insert from the oligodendrocytes at the bottom well.Add potassium to the insert to raise extracellular potassium levels, which inhibits the efflux of intracellular potassium. The potassium accumulation depolarizes the neurons, triggering the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels and allowing calcium influx. The influx stimulates the release of excitatory...

Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is a murine experimental model of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). CHS is based on sensitization with reactive hapten by painting the shaved skin of the chest and abdomen, with a subsequent ear skin challenge with a diluted hapten, causing a swelling reaction that is assessed in various ways.

Larval Contact Assay: A Procedure to Evaluate Mosquito Larval Mortality following Direct Contact with Test Larvicidal Compound

In this video, we describe the larval contact assay to evaluate the toxicity of the dopamine receptor antagonist amitriptyline on the third instar stage larvae of mosquitoes, known vectors of several human infectious diseases. Assessing the larval mortality upon incubation with different amitriptyline concentrations over different time intervals helps determine its lethal concentration 50.
