D-limonene Eps

D-limonene is a naturally occurring monocyclic monoterpene hydrocarbon and a major component of citrus peel oil, where it contributes characteristic aroma and biological activity. Its hydrophobic structure enables interactions with lipid membranes and other nonpolar cellular components, influencing membrane integrity and the activity of selected microorganisms and insects. In biology, D-limonene is studied for antimicrobial, antioxidant, and insecticidal effects, as well as its potential use in food preservation, pharmaceutical formulations, and sustainable bioproducts. Research on this compound also supports the valorization of citrus-processing waste and the development of plant-derived alternatives for biotechnology and applied biology.

An Assay to Study Bile-Salt Induced Biofilm Formation through EPS Matrix Detection

2025

This video demonstrates a fluorescence-based method for quantifying bile salt-induced biofilm formation. Upon the addition of bile salts in the culture of a pathogenic enteric bacteria, biofilm production is detected using a fluorescent lectin that binds to the polysaccharides in the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix of the biofilm.

EPS and iPS Cells in Disease Research

2023

Embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells are excellent models for disease research because of their ability to self-renew and differentiate into most cell types. Somatic cells from a patient are isolated and reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells or iPSCs. These iPSCs are later differentiated into the desired cell type, which mirrors the diseased cell of the patient. In this way, disease models have been created for investigating diseases such as Down syndrome, type I diabetes,...

Fizzy extraction is a new laboratory technique for analysis of volatile and semivolatile compounds. A carrier gas is dissolved in the liquid sample by applying overpressure and stirring the sample. The sample chamber is then decompressed. The analyte species are liberated to the gas phase due to effervescence.
