Drosophila Crop Motility

Drosophila crop motility is the coordinated movement of the fruit fly’s crop, a foregut storage organ that temporarily holds ingested food and regulates its delivery to the midgut. Rhythmic contractions of crop muscles propel food through the gut, while neural and hormonal signals adjust contraction patterns in response to feeding, starvation, and internal nutritional state. Studying this process helps reveal how the insect nervous system, digestive tract, and metabolic signals interact to control gastrointestinal function. Because Drosophila offers powerful genetic tools and conserved physiological pathways, crop motility provides a tractable model for investigating gut regulation, feeding behavior, and digestive disorders.

An Introduction to Cell Motility and Migration

2023

Cell motility and migration play important roles in both normal biology and in disease. On one hand, migration allows cells to generate complex tissues and organs during development, but on the other hand, the same mechanisms are used by tumor cells to move and spread in a process known as cancer metastasis. One of the primary cellular machineries that make cell movement possible is an intracellular network of myosin and actin molecules, together known as “actomyosin”, which creates a...
