Elastic Cartilage

Elastic cartilage is a specialized connective tissue that provides structural support while maintaining flexibility, making it important in parts of the body that must bend and return to their original shape. Its matrix contains abundant elastic fibers alongside collagen, and chondrocytes housed in lacunae maintain this resilient extracellular environment; a surrounding perichondrium supports nutrient exchange and tissue maintenance. In biology, elastic cartilage is found in the external ear, epiglottis, and auditory tube, where it helps preserve shape and accommodate repeated movement. Studying its organization clarifies how extracellular matrix composition determines tissue mechanics and function.

Elasticity

Elasticity is the ability of an object to withstand the effects of distortion and to return to its original size and shape once the forces causing deformation are removed. When an elastic material deforms under the action of an external force, it experiences internal resistance to the deformation. However, if no external force is applied, it returns to its original state. The elasticity of an object can be described by a stress-strain curve, which represents the relationship between stress...

Elasticity in Concrete

Upon subjecting concrete to moderate or high uniaxial compressive or tensile stresses, the strain response is non-linear relative to the stress applied. As the stress is removed, the resulting stress-strain curve deviates from the original path traced during loading, creating a hysteresis loop, indicative of the concrete's non-linear and non-elastic properties. Typically, a material's modulus of elasticity, which is a measure of the material's stiffness, is inferred from the linear portion of...

Elasticity of Demand (Ed)

Price elasticity of demand is a concept that measures how sensitive people are to changes in prices. Elastic Demand: Consider selling tickets to a concert. When the ticket prices increase, some people might decide not to go and opt for other forms of entertainment, like watching a movie at home or going to a different event. This shows that there are alternative options available, leading to a significant change in demand with a small change in price. Inelastic Demand: Now, think about...

Elasticity and Slope

The slope and elasticity of a demand curve, while related, serve different purposes in economic analysis. Slope of Demand Curve: • The slope represents the rate at which the quantity demanded changes in response to a change in price. • It depends on the units used for measuring price and quantity, complicating comparisons across diverse products and markets. For instance, the slope for a product priced in euros per unit will differ from that of a product priced in yen per unit, even if their...
