Endothelial Cell Invasion

Endothelial cell invasion is the process by which vascular endothelial cells move into surrounding tissue, a key step in angiogenesis and blood vessel remodeling. In response to signals such as vascular endothelial growth factor, cells loosen cell-cell contacts, degrade the extracellular matrix and basement membrane with proteolytic enzymes, and migrate along chemical and structural cues. Laboratory invasion assays measure this behavior using matrix-coated membranes or three-dimensional models. Studying endothelial cell invasion helps explain wound healing, embryonic development, and tumor vascularization, while providing a basis for evaluating anti-angiogenic therapies and investigating how blood vessels respond to changing tissue environments.
