Engineered Tissue Implantation

Engineered tissue implantation is the surgical placement of lab-grown or biomaterial-supported tissue into the body to restore, replace, or improve damaged biological function. The approach combines living cells, scaffolds, and signaling conditions that support cell attachment, tissue organization, vascular integration, and communication with surrounding host tissue after implantation. In biology and regenerative medicine, researchers use it to study tissue repair and develop treatments for injuries, disease, and organ dysfunction. Successful implants must achieve structural stability, compatibility with the immune system, and sustained integration, making the field important for personalized therapies and the future development of functional tissue replacements.

This is a guideline for constructing in vivo vascularized tissue using a microsurgical arteriovenous loop or a flow-through pedicle configuration inside a tissue engineering chamber. The vascularized tissues generated can be employed for organ regeneration and replacement of tissue defects, as well as for drug testing and disease modeling.
