Envelope Proteins

Envelope proteins are proteins embedded in or associated with the lipid membranes surrounding certain viruses, where they help the viral particle interact with host cells. They often recognize specific receptors on the cell surface and trigger membrane fusion or other entry processes, allowing the viral genome to reach the cytoplasm; their structure and activity can depend on protein folding, glycosylation, and membrane organization. Because envelope proteins determine host range, tissue targeting, and key steps in infection, they are important subjects in virology, vaccine development, antiviral drug design, and studies of immune recognition. Their variability also influences viral evolution and resistance to host defenses.

Outer Layers of the Cell Envelope

2025

The outermost layers of prokaryotic cells play a critical role in their survival, virulence, and interaction with the environment. These layers, often composed of polysaccharides, polypeptides, or proteins, form protective and adhesive structures that vary in organization and function.Capsules and Slime LayersCapsules are highly organized, tightly bound layers that firmly attach to the bacterial cell wall. Capsules are usually made of polysaccharides, though some are made of polypeptides. These...
