Nucleoside Methylation

Nucleoside methylation is the enzymatic or chemical addition of a methyl group to a nucleoside, a building block of DNA and RNA, and it helps regulate molecular structure, stability, and recognition. In biological systems, methyltransferase enzymes commonly transfer a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to specific atoms on a nucleobase or ribose, creating modified nucleosides such as methylcytidine or methyladenosine. These modifications can influence base pairing, RNA folding, molecular interactions, and the processing or translation of genetic information. Studying nucleoside methylation supports research into epigenetic regulation, RNA biology, genome function, disease mechanisms, and the development of analytical methods or therapeutic strategies.

DNA Methylation Analysis

2023

Methylation at CpG dinucleotides is a chemical modification of DNA hypothesized to play important roles in regulating gene expression. In particular, the methylation of clusters of methylation sites, called “CpG islands”, near promoters and other gene regulatory elements may contribute to the stable silencing of genes, for example, during epigenetic processes such as genomic imprinting and X-chromosome inactivation. At the same time, aberrant CpG methylation has been shown to be associated with...

(2017)This video demonstrates the infection of stationary-phase mammalian cells with HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus-1), followed by replication of the viral genome using host and viral replication machinery. A synthetic nucleoside analog is incorporated into newly synthesized viral DNA to label replicating genomes, which are subsequently isolated for...
