Esophageal Artery

The esophageal artery is a blood vessel that supplies the esophagus, delivering oxygen and nutrients needed to maintain its muscular wall and mucosal lining. Esophageal arteries typically arise as small branches from nearby vessels, including the thoracic aorta, inferior thyroid artery, or left gastric artery, and form longitudinal networks that support regional perfusion. Their anatomical distribution is important in biology and medicine because it helps explain esophageal nourishment, healing, and bleeding patterns. Knowledge of these vessels also guides interpretation of vascular anatomy and reduces the risk of injury during surgical or endoscopic procedures.

2023

This video describes an in vitro culture technique to generate human organotypic esophageal constructs by co-culturing primary human esophageal fibroblast and squamous epithelial cells within a decellularized porcine scaffold. These 3D culture models mimic the function and physiology of their in vivo tissue counterparts.

Esophageal Achalasia

2026

Esophageal achalasia is a chronic neurogenic disorder characterized by impaired relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and absent or ineffective peristalsis in the distal esophagus. This leads to a functional obstruction without a physical blockage, despite significant disruption of esophageal motility.EtiologyAchalasia is caused by degeneration of the myenteric (Auerbach's) plexus, specifically the loss of inhibitory ganglion cells that produce vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)...

2015

This manuscript describes the production, characterization and potential uses of a tissue engineered 3D esophageal construct prepared from normal primary human esophageal fibroblast and squamous epithelial cells seeded within a de-cellularized porcine scaffold. The results demonstrate the formation of a mature stratified epithelium similar to the normal human esophagus.
