Essential Oil Yield

Essential oil yield is the quantity of volatile, aromatic compounds recovered from plant material, typically expressed as a percentage of the starting biomass, and it helps assess plant chemistry and extraction efficiency. In biological studies, oils accumulate in specialized structures such as glandular trichomes, secretory cavities, or ducts, then are released through processes including steam distillation or hydrodistillation; species, plant tissue, developmental stage, moisture, temperature, and extraction time can strongly affect the result. Measuring yield supports the selection of medicinal and aromatic plants, comparison of cultivation or harvesting conditions, quality control, and research into plant defense, metabolism, and sustainable production.

Antimicrobial lab coats prevent the cross-contamination of pathogen accumulation and accidental bio-spills. Here, we describe the protocol for developing a skin-friendly antimicrobial fabric using nano-herbal encapsulation and modified standard tests to precisely evaluate the efficacy and suitability for typical usage of the lab coat.

The Effect of the Application of Thyme Essential Oil on Microbial Load During Meat Drying

Microorganisms such as Escherichia coli that contaminate meat products cause foodborne illnesses. The use of essential oils in the meat drying process has not been deeply studied. Here, we present a novel method of applying thyme essential oil to meat during drying to reduce the microbial load in dried meat.

ATP Yield

2019

Cellular respiration produces 30 - 32 ATP per glucose molecule. Although most of the ATP results from oxidative phosphorylation and the electron transport chain (ETC), 4 ATP are gained beforehand (2 from glycolysis and 2 from the citric acid cycle). The ETC is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane and is comprised of four main protein complexes and an ATP synthase. NADH and FADH2 pass electrons to these complexes, which pump protons into the intermembrane space. This distribution of...

We illustrate the methods involved in screening and identification of the biosurfactant producing microbes. Methods for chromatographic characterization and chemical identification of the biosurfactants, determining the industrial applicability of the biosurfactant in enhancing residual oil recovery are also presented.

Reaction Yield

The theoretical yield of a reaction is the amount of product estimated to form based on the stoichiometry of the balanced chemical equation. The theoretical yield assumes the complete conversion of the limiting reactant into the desired product. The amount of product that is obtained by performing the reaction is called the actual yield, and it may be less than or (very rarely) equal to the theoretical yield. Percent Yield In the case of chemical reactions, the actual yield of the product is...
