Disease Comorbidity

Disease comorbidity is the coexistence of two or more diseases or health conditions in the same individual, a pattern that matters because interacting disorders can alter prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment. Comorbid conditions may arise through shared genetic or environmental risk factors, common biological pathways such as chronic inflammation, or effects of one disease or its treatment on another. Studying comorbidity helps biologists and clinicians distinguish disease associations from causal relationships, identify vulnerable populations, and design research models that reflect real-world complexity. Comorbidity analysis also supports risk prediction and more individualized therapeutic strategies while revealing connections among organ systems and disease mechanisms.

An Overview of Genetics and Disease

2023

Many human diseases are associated with mutations or variations in genetic sequences. Some of these genetic variants are heritable, passed down from generation to generation, while others arise sporadically during an organism’s life and cause diseases such as cancer. Researchers are trying to identify and characterize these genetic alterations in the hopes of improving diagnosis and therapeutic options for patients. In this video, we will examine the history of genetic disease research, and...

Introduction Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment. Crohn's disease Crohn's disease is a chronic, systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that predominantly affects the gastrointestinal tract. It is marked by transmural...
