Forceps Use

Forceps use is a basic manipulation technique in which a hand-operated instrument grasps, holds, or transfers small objects that are difficult to handle directly. In biology, forceps work through opposing jaws that apply controlled pressure, with tip shape, serrations, and applied force determining grip and the risk of damaging delicate material. Researchers use them during dissection, specimen preparation, tissue handling, and the transfer of small laboratory materials under magnification. Proper selection and technique improve precision, reduce contamination and mechanical injury, and support reliable observations in microscopy, anatomy, developmental biology, and experimental procedures.

Three-dimensional co-culture spheroid angiogenesis assay system is designed to mimic the physiologic angiogenesis. Co-culture spheroids are formed by two human vascular cell precursors, ECFCs and MSCs, and embedded in collagen gel. The new system is effective for evaluating angiogenic modulators, and provides more relevant information to the in vivo study.

This article provides a protocol for the extraction of venom from spiders using electrical stimulation in order to 1) conduct proteomic characterization, 2) stimulate venom gland gene expression, and 3) perform functional studies of venoms. This is followed by a description of venom gland microdissections for gene expression studies.
