Gravity Flow Chromatography

Gravity flow chromatography is a column-based separation technique that uses gravity to move a liquid sample through a stationary phase, enabling the isolation and analysis of biological molecules. As the mobile phase passes through the packed column, sample components interact differently with the stationary material, causing them to migrate at distinct rates and elute in separate fractions. Depending on the stationary phase, separation may reflect size, charge, polarity, or specific binding affinity. In biology, the method supports protein purification, nucleic acid preparation, pigment separation, and small-scale fraction collection for downstream characterization.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jimmy Franco - Merrimack College Column chromatography is one of the most useful techniques for purifying compounds. This technique utilizes a stationary phase, which is packed in a column, and a mobile phase that passes through the column. This technique exploits the differences in polarity between compounds, allowing the molecules to be facilely separated.1 The two most common stationary phases for column chromatography are silica gel (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3), with...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Ion-exchange chromatography is a type of chromatography that separates analytes based on charge. A column is used that is filled with a charged stationary phase on a solid support, called an ion-exchange resin. Strong cation-exchange chromatography preferentially separates out cations by using a negatively-charged resin while strong anion-exchange chromatography preferentially selects out anions by using a positively-charged...

Spaceflight blood diagnostics need innovation. Few demonstrations have been published illustrating in-flight, reduced-gravity health diagnostic technology. Here we present a method for construction and operation of a parabolic flight test rig for a prototype point-of-care flow-cytometry design, with components and preparation strategies adaptable to other setups.

Gravitropism: Plant Responses to Gravity Higher plants sense gravity using statocytes, cells found near the vascular tissue in shoots, and in the root cap columella in roots. Statocytes contain starch-filled organelles called statoliths. The statoliths settle, or sediment, at the bottom of the statocyte in the direction of gravity. Statolith sedimentation triggers a signaling cascade, resulting in the asymmetrical distribution of the plant hormone auxin across root and shoot tips. This...
