Gustatory Neuron Recording

Gustatory neuron recording is an electrophysiological technique used to measure how taste-sensitive neurons respond to chemical stimuli, linking sensory input to neural activity. In a typical experiment, researchers apply tastants such as sweet, salty, sour, bitter, or umami compounds to taste receptor cells or sensory pathways and record changes in membrane potential, firing rate, or action-potential patterns. Comparing these responses reveals how gustatory neurons encode stimulus identity, intensity, and combinations of tastes. The method supports research on sensory processing, appetite, feeding behavior, and neural circuit function, while also helping clarify how taste information is transmitted from peripheral receptors to the brain.

We present three new methods to study gustatory coding. Using a simple animal, the moth Manduca sexta (Manduca), we describe a dissection protocol, the use of extracellular tetrodes to record the activity of multiple gustatory receptor neurons, and a system for delivering and monitoring precisely timed pulses of tastants.

Recording Electrophysiological Activity of the Neuronal Network in a Neuron-Astrocyte Co-culture

2025

This video demonstrates establishing a neuron-astrocyte co-culture for recording neuronal network activity. Upon establishing the co-culture of motor neurons and astrocytes on a multi-electrode array (MEA) plate, the synchronous rhythmic electrical activity of the neuronal network was recorded extracellularly using the MEA.

In Vivo Recording of Intracellular Signals from a Single Neuron

This video demonstrates the recording of electrical signals from single brain neurons using a fine-tipped glass micropipette and a specialized setup. The micropipette is carefully inserted into the rat's brain and is buzzed to penetrate the neuron to record internal neuronal electrical signals.

Using two methods to estimate gene expression in the major gustatory appendages of Aedes aegypti, we have identified the set of genes putatively underlying the neuronal responses to bitter and repulsive compounds, as determined by electrophysiological examination.

Simultaneous Eye Tracking and Single-Neuron Recording to Identify Target-Selective Neurons

2025

The video demonstrates an assay to identify target-selective neurons via simultaneous eye-tracking and single-neuron recordings. A human participant is tasked with identifying a target object among an array of objects in a display, and the eye movement is tracked. Simultaneously, single neurons' firing rate is recorded via electrodes implanted in the brain. The data from both recordings are correlated to assess the presence of target-selective neurons.
