In Vivo Calcium Imaging

In vivo calcium imaging is a technique for monitoring calcium signals in living organisms, providing a window into the activity of neurons and other excitable cells within intact biological systems. Researchers introduce fluorescent calcium indicators that change their brightness when they bind calcium, then use microscopy to record these changes over time as patterns of cellular activity. Often combined with two-photon microscopy, the method can track many cells simultaneously with spatial and temporal resolution. In biology, in vivo calcium imaging helps link neural activity to behavior, study circuit function and disease, and examine how cells respond to sensory, physiological, or environmental changes.
