Incomplete Tetanus

Incomplete tetanus is a sustained skeletal muscle contraction in which repeated stimuli arrive before the muscle fully relaxes, producing a partially fused response. Each action potential triggers calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum; when stimulation continues at a frequency that permits only partial calcium reuptake, successive twitches summate and generate a fluctuating level of tension rather than a completely smooth contraction. This physiological principle demonstrates how stimulus frequency regulates muscle force and helps explain graded movement, posture, and fatigue. In laboratory biology, measuring incomplete tetanus provides a useful model for investigating excitation-contraction coupling and neuromuscular performance.

Tetanus

Tetanus is a life-threatening neurological disorder characterized by persistent muscle contractions and spastic paralysis. It is caused by Clostridium tetani, a motile, Gram-positive, rod-shaped, obligate anaerobe. These bacteria produce terminal endospores, giving them a distinctive “lollipop” or “tennis-racket” appearance. They thrive in anaerobic environments, such as those found in deep puncture wounds.Once introduced into the body, the spores germinate into vegetative cells. These cells...

Incomplete Dominance

Gregor Mendel's work (1822 - 1884) was primarily focused on pea plants. Through his initial experiments, he determined that every gene in a diploid cell has two variants called alleles inherited from each parent. He suggested that amongst these two alleles, one allele is dominant in character and the other recessive. The combination of alleles determines the phenotype of a gene in an organism. According to Mendel, organisms with both copies or a single copy of the dominant allele display a...

This video illustrates testing of adjuvant or additional therapy in a mouse model with incompletely resected subcutaneous tumors. The partially tumor-resected mouse is treated with an antibody targeting the anti-cytotoxic protein of T regulatory cells, potentially reducing tumor regrowth and suggesting effective adjuvant therapy.
