Kidney Dissection

Kidney dissection is the controlled opening and examination of a kidney to reveal its external features and internal organization, making renal anatomy accessible for biological study. During dissection, careful incisions expose structures such as the renal capsule, cortex, medulla, pyramids, calyces, renal pelvis, and blood vessels, allowing students to connect visible anatomy with urine formation and transport. In biology education and research, this practical method supports comparative anatomy, reinforces how structure relates to kidney function, and provides a foundation for studying filtration, fluid balance, disease-related changes, and the organization of the urinary system.

The zebrafish kidney is home to both renal and hematopoietic adult stem/progenitor cells, and represents an outstanding opportunity to study these cell types and their progeny in a vertebrate model organism. Here, we demonstrate a detailed dissection procedure that enables the researcher to identify and surgically remove the adult zebrafish kidney, which can be used for applications such as cell isolation, transplantation, and expression studies of kidney and/or blood cell populations.
