Light Sensitive Photoreceptors

Light-sensitive photoreceptors are specialized cells or light-detecting proteins that convert photons into biological signals, enabling organisms to sense and respond to illumination. In animals, opsin proteins bound to retinal change conformation when they absorb specific wavelengths, initiating signaling cascades that alter membrane potential and transmit information to the nervous system; in plants and microorganisms, related photoreceptors regulate cellular responses through distinct molecular pathways. These systems support vision, circadian timing, phototaxis, and light-controlled development. Studying photoreceptor structure, spectral sensitivity, and signal transduction helps explain sensory biology and informs research on retinal disease, optogenetics, biological clocks, and light-based therapies.

Photoreceptors and Plant Responses to Light

2020

Light plays a significant role in regulating the growth and development of plants. In addition to providing energy for photosynthesis, light provides other important cues to regulate a range of developmental and physiological responses in plants. What Is a Photoreceptor? Plants respond to light using a unique set of light-sensitive proteins called photoreceptors. Photoreceptors contain photopigments, which consist of a protein component bound to a non-protein, light-absorbing pigment called...
