Lipid Metabolism Regulation

Lipid metabolism regulation is the coordinated control of how cells synthesize, store, mobilize, and use fats to maintain energy balance and support membrane and signaling functions. Hormones and cellular energy sensors adjust pathways such as fatty acid synthesis, lipolysis, and oxidation: insulin promotes nutrient storage after feeding, while glucagon and AMP-activated protein kinase favor fat mobilization and oxidation when energy is limited. Understanding these controls helps explain how tissues adapt to fasting, exercise, and changing nutrient availability, and provides a foundation for studying obesity, diabetes, fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disorders, and potential metabolic therapies.

Regulation of Metabolism

2023

Cellular needs and conditions vary from cell to cell and change within individual cells over time. For example, the required enzymes and energetic demands of stomach cells are different from those of fat storage cells, skin cells, blood cells, and nerve cells. Furthermore, a digestive cell works much harder to process and break down nutrients during the time that closely follows a meal compared with many hours after a meal. As these cellular demands and conditions vary, so do the amounts and...

Overview of Lipid Metabolism

2024

Lipid metabolism is a crucial process in the human body that involves the synthesis and degradation of lipids. This process is essential for energy production, cell membrane formation, and hormone production, among other functions. Lipolysis: The Breakdown of Lipids: Lipolysis is the process of breaking down lipids, particularly triglycerides, into glycerol and fatty acids. This process typically occurs in the adipose tissue and is triggered by various hormones, including glucagon and...

2013

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

Exploring the Regulation of Lipid Droplet Catabolism through Lipophagy

2025

Lipophagy is a selective form of autophagy that involves the degradation of lipid droplets. Dysfunctions in this process are associated with cancer development. However, the precise mechanisms are not yet fully understood. This protocol describes quantitative imaging approaches to better understand the interplay between autophagy, lipid metabolism, and cancer progression.
