Manganese Chloride Labeling

Manganese chloride labeling is a biological tracing technique that uses manganese ions to mark cells, tissues, or biological pathways for detection and analysis. Because manganese is paramagnetic, accumulated Mn2+ alters nearby magnetic properties and can change signal intensity in magnetic resonance imaging, while its movement through cells or tissues provides information about uptake and transport. Researchers apply this approach to investigate cellular activity, tissue organization, and physiological processes, particularly in neuroscience and imaging-based biology. Careful control of concentration, exposure time, and tissue handling is important because manganese distribution affects labeling specificity and excessive exposure can produce toxic effects.

A technique is described for broadly opening the blood-brain barrier in the mouse using microbubbles and ultrasound. Using this technique, manganese can be administered to the mouse brain. Because manganese is an MRI contrast agent that accumulates in depolarized neurons, this approach enables imaging of neuronal activity.

Improving Thermoelectric Properties of Bi2Te3 Thin Films By Manganese Co-Sputtering

2026

A radiofrequency co-sputtering protocol was developed to fabricate manganese-doped Bi2Te3 thin films and evaluate how manganese input influences structural and thermoelectric transport properties. Moderate manganese incorporation improved film uniformity and power-factor-related transport behavior, while higher manganese input increased structural disorder and resistivity.

In this video, we are showing how to label human embryonic stem cells (hESC) with manganese chloride (MnCl2) which can enter cells via voltage-gated calcium channels when the cells are biologically active. Additionally, we show the use of MnCl2 as cellular MRI contrast agent to determine the in vitro viability of hESC.
