Melanocyte Protection

Melanocyte protection refers to the cellular mechanisms that preserve melanocyte survival and function against ultraviolet radiation, oxidative stress, inflammation, and other sources of damage. Melanocytes respond to ultraviolet exposure by increasing melanin synthesis and transferring melanin-containing melanosomes to nearby keratinocytes, where pigment helps reduce ultraviolet penetration and associated DNA injury; antioxidant defenses and DNA-repair pathways also support cellular resilience. Studying these mechanisms clarifies how skin pigmentation, tanning responses, and pigmentary disorders arise. This knowledge informs research on photoprotection, vitiligo, melanoma biology, and strategies for maintaining healthy skin and limiting ultraviolet-induced damage.
