Membrane Feeding Technique

The membrane feeding technique is a laboratory method that delivers a liquid meal to insects or other small organisms through a permeable artificial membrane, enabling controlled study of feeding biology. In vector research, a warmed blood meal is placed beneath a membrane that mimics skin, and insects pierce or probe the surface with their mouthparts to ingest it. Researchers can adjust meal composition, temperature, and exposure conditions while limiting direct contact with a host. This approach supports investigations of digestion, pathogen acquisition and transmission, reproductive effects, and insecticide or drug activity, while improving experimental consistency and reducing reliance on live animals.
