Microdialysis Probe

A microdialysis probe is a sampling device that measures soluble molecules in the extracellular fluid of living tissues, allowing researchers to monitor local chemistry over time with limited tissue disruption. The probe continuously perfuses a physiological solution through a small semipermeable membrane; molecules such as neurotransmitters, metabolites, and drugs diffuse across the membrane down concentration gradients, and the outgoing dialysate is collected for analysis. In biology, microdialysis supports studies of brain signaling, metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and tissue responses to injury or treatment, providing time-resolved measurements that connect molecular changes with cellular and organism-level processes.

Microdialysis of Ethanol During Operant Ethanol Self-administration and Ethanol Determination by Gas Chromatography

2012

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

Microdialysis of Interstitial Fluid from a Mouse Brain to Isolate Extracellular Proteins

2025

The video demonstrates the process of using a microdialysis probe to collect extracellular proteins from the interstitial fluid (ISF) of a mouse brain. A microdialysis probe, equipped with a high-molecular-weight cut-off semi-permeable membrane, is inserted into the brain of an anesthetized mouse via an implanted guide cannula. The probe, connected to pumps, allows a physiological buffer to perfuse the brain tissue and mix with the ISF. Proteins in the ISF diffuse across the semi-permeable...
