Mosquito Microbiome

The mosquito microbiome is the community of microorganisms living in and on mosquitoes, where it influences host biology, disease transmission, and ecological interactions. Microbes colonize tissues such as the gut and respond to environmental conditions, diet, and mosquito development; in turn, they can affect nutrient use, immune activity, and the ability of pathogens to establish and replicate. Studying these relationships helps explain variation in mosquito fitness and vector competence, or the capacity to transmit disease-causing organisms. Microbiome research also supports investigations of biological control strategies, including approaches that manipulate mosquito-associated microbes to reduce pathogen transmission.

Microbial communities in mosquitoes hold great promise for vector biocontrol strategies. Most symbionts are uncultivable, requiring metagenomic analyses. We describe a method to dissect female mosquitoes and separate ovaries, midgut, and salivary glands preventing cross-contamination, facilitating microbiome studies at the organ level, and enhancing understanding of microorganisms' roles in mosquito biology.
