Mouse Kidney Transplantation

Mouse kidney transplantation is an experimental surgical model in which a donor kidney is transferred to a recipient mouse to study renal function, immunity, and tissue repair. The procedure requires connecting the graft’s blood vessels to the recipient circulation and establishing urinary drainage, after which the transplanted organ must restore filtration while facing potential immune-mediated rejection. Researchers use this model to investigate transplant immunology, tolerance, ischemia-reperfusion injury, kidney disease, and the effects of immunosuppressive therapies. Because genetic backgrounds and experimental conditions can be controlled, mouse kidney transplantation helps reveal mechanisms of graft survival and supports the development of strategies for improving organ transplantation.

The severe organ shortage has resulted in increased use of marginal kidney grafts for transplantation. This has triggered interest in alternative storage methods, since marginal grafts especially tolerate cold storage poorly. The technique of normothermic ex vivo kidney perfusion (NEVKP) represents a novel preservation method for kidney grafts prior to transplantation.
