Nadh Regeneration

NADH regeneration is the biochemical process that converts reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) back to its oxidized form, NAD+, sustaining cellular redox balance and energy metabolism. It occurs when NADH transfers electrons to an acceptor, such as oxygen through the electron transport chain or an organic molecule during fermentation, allowing oxidation-reduction reactions and glycolysis to continue. In biology and biotechnology, NADH regeneration is essential for maintaining metabolic flux, supporting ATP production, and driving enzyme-catalyzed synthesis of valuable compounds; researchers also use engineered cells and cofactor-recycling systems to improve bioproduction and study how metabolic conditions shape cell function.

The objective is to monitor the mitochondrial redox state of isolated hearts within the context of physiologic preload and afterload pressures. A biventricular working rabbit heart model is presented. High spatiotemporal resolution fluorescence imaging of NADH is used to monitor the mitochondrial redox state of epicardial tissue.

Here we describe a method to directly visualize microregional tissue hypoxia in the mouse cortex in vivo. It is based on concurrent two-photon imaging of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and the cortical microcirculation. This method is useful for high resolution analysis of tissue oxygen supply.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...

A System for Culturing Iris Pigment Epithelial Cells to Study Lens Regeneration in Newt

In newt, the lens regenerates always from the dorsal iris by transdifferentiation of the iris pigmented epithelial cells (IPEs). Here we describe a procedure to culture dorsal and ventral newt IPE cells and their implantation to the newt eye. The implanted cells are then studied by tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry.

Role of Reduced Coenzymes NADH and FADH₂

The energy released from the breakdown of the chemical bonds within nutrients can be stored either through the reduction of electron carriers or in the bonds of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). In living systems, a small class of compounds functions as mobile electron carriers, molecules that bind to and shuttle high-energy electrons between compounds in pathways. The principal electron carriers that will be considered originate from the B vitamin group and are derivatives of nucleotides; they are...
