Nanodrop Spectrophotometer

A NanoDrop spectrophotometer is a microvolume instrument that measures the concentration and purity of biological samples, especially DNA, RNA, and proteins, using only a small liquid volume. The sample forms a liquid column between two optical surfaces, and the instrument measures light absorbance across selected wavelengths according to the Beer–Lambert law. In biology, researchers use these measurements to assess nucleic acid yield, identify contaminants through absorbance ratios, and determine whether samples are suitable for applications such as PCR, sequencing, cloning, or protein analysis. Its rapid, low-volume workflow supports efficient sample quality control in research and teaching laboratories.

2023

The spectrophotometer is a routinely used instrument in scientific research. Spectrophotometry is the quantitative measurement of how much a chemical substance absorbs light by passing a beam of light through the sample using a spectrophotometer. In this video, basic concepts in spectrophotometry, including transmittance, absorbance and the Beer-Lambert Law are reviewed in addition to the components of the spectrophotometer. These concepts provide a foundation for how to determine the...
