Neuroactive Agent Delivery

Neuroactive agent delivery is the targeted transport of compounds that alter nervous system activity to sites where they can produce therapeutic or experimental effects. Because the blood–brain barrier restricts many molecules, delivery strategies may modify drug properties, use carrier systems, or apply localized administration to improve access, distribution, and controlled release in neural tissue. These approaches support research and treatment development for neurological and psychiatric conditions by helping investigators evaluate how agents influence neuronal signaling, synaptic function, and behavior. Effective delivery can increase therapeutic precision while reducing systemic exposure and unwanted effects.

As neuroscience inquiry becomes more sophisticated, investigation of brain structures and circuitry requires improved levels of accuracy and higher resolution. We have developed a method for the preparation and implantation of a chronic infusion system within the brain utilizing a borosilicate microcannula with a tip diameter of 50 microns.

Microinjection-Based Delivery of a Therapeutic Agent into an Awake Rodent Brain

Source: Poland, R. et al. Rodent Brain Microinjection to Study Molecular Substrates of Motivated Behavior. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)In this video, a water-filled microinjection setup consisting of a syringe and microinjector tubing is used for precise drug delivery. A rat with a pre-implanted guide cannula undergoes targeted brain microinjection, enabling accurate administration of therapeutic agents in awake animals with minimal tissue damage.

We have developed a swine model for the target delivery of pharmacological agents within the pericardial space/fluid. Using this approach, the relative benefits of administered agents on induced atrial fibrillation, relative refractory periods and/or ischemic protection can be investigated.

Intrabronchial Delivery: A Technique to Administer an Experimental Agent Selectively Into a Mouse Lung
