Niskin Bottles

Niskin bottles are cylindrical sampling devices used to collect water from a specific depth, enabling scientists to study biological and chemical conditions below the surface. Lowered open on a cable, the bottle is triggered by a messenger or electronic signal that releases end caps, sealing the surrounding water inside while preserving its depth-specific composition. In biology, researchers use Niskin bottles to measure plankton, microbes, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and other indicators of aquatic ecosystems. Samples collected from lakes, coastal waters, and the deep ocean support studies of food webs, biogeochemical cycling, pollution, and environmental change.
