Drug Safety Evaluation

Drug safety evaluation is the systematic assessment of a drug’s potential risks, including toxicity, adverse effects, and harmful interactions, before and during its use in humans. It combines laboratory studies, animal models, pharmacokinetic analysis, and clinical monitoring to examine how dose, exposure, metabolism, and elimination influence biological responses. In biology, researchers use these data to identify target-organ toxicity, establish safety margins, and determine whether observed benefits outweigh potential harms. Safety evaluation supports regulatory decisions, guides dose selection, improves clinical trial design, and helps detect rare or long-term adverse effects through continued pharmacovigilance after approval.

Here, we show the generation of human engineered heart tissue from induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes. We present a method to analyze contraction force and exemplary alteration of contraction pattern by the hERG channel inhibitor E-4031. This method shows high level of robustness and suitability for cardiac drug screening.

Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Among the many hazards present in the laboratory, electrical hazards are one of the most common we must be cognizant of since most of the laboratory equipment we use requires electricity for operation. Improper handling or operation of electrical devices might lead to electric shock with the potential risk of injury or even death. Electric sparks can lead to fire or explosion (since many flammable...
