Optical Surface Cleaning

Optical surface cleaning is the controlled removal of dust, fingerprints, oils, and other residues from lenses, windows, and other light-sensitive surfaces to preserve optical performance. It works by combining gentle particle removal with compatible cleaning agents and lint-free materials that dissolve or lift contaminants without scratching or leaving films. In biology, clean microscope objectives, coverslips, fluorescence components, and imaging sensors improve light transmission, image contrast, and measurement reliability. Proper cleaning also helps prevent contamination, protects delicate optical coatings, and extends instrument service life, making it an essential practice in microscopy, cell imaging, and other laboratory workflows.

Keeping the microscope optics clean is important for high-quality imaging. Dust, fingerprints, excess immersion oil, or mounting medium on or in a microscope causes reduction in contrast and resolution. DIC is especially sensitive to contamination and scratches on the lens surfaces. This protocol details the procedure for keeping the microscope clean.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Daniel Kim, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Organic synthesis is about transforming a readily available reagent into a more valuable product. Having clean glassware is crucial for the efficiency of this process. Dirty glassware can potentially affect the reaction and make isolation of the final product more challenging. Thus, a synthetic chemist must keep the glassware spotless. The methods described here will detail different glass cleaning...

Here we present a protocol to estimate material and surface optical properties using the photoacoustic effect combined with total internal reflection. This technique evanescent field-based photoacoustics can be used to create a photoacoustic metrology system to estimate materials' thicknesses, bulk and thin film refractive indices, and explore their optical properties.
