Organ Development

Organ development is the biological process through which embryonic cells form, organize, and mature into functional organs, making it central to growth, health, and disease. It begins as signaling pathways guide cell fate, proliferation, migration, and differentiation, while interactions among developing tissues shape organ architecture through coordinated morphogenesis. Studying these mechanisms helps explain congenital abnormalities and how organs acquire specialized functions. Research on organ development also supports disease modeling, organoid formation, regenerative medicine, and strategies for repairing or replacing damaged tissues.

Development of the Sexual Organs in the Embryo and Fetus

2024

Development of the reproductive organs in an embryo starts from a bipotential state. This means the early embryo can develop either male or female reproductive organs. The formation of these organs begins with the growth of gonadal ridges that arise from the intermediate mesoderm during the fifth week of development. Near the gonadal ridges, two duct systems are present: the mesonephric ducts (Wolffian ducts) and paramesonephric ducts (Müllerian ducts). These ducts form the basis for the male...

The goal of this protocol is to explain and demonstrate the development of a three-dimensional (3D) microfluidic model of highly aligned human cardiac tissue, composed of stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes co-cultured with cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) within a biomimetic, collagen-based hydrogel, for applications in cardiac tissue engineering, drug screening, and disease modeling.

Here, we present a protocol for active site validation of metal-organic framework catalysts by comparing stoichiometric and catalytic carbonyl-ene reactions to find out whether a reaction takes place on the inner or outer surface of metal-organic frameworks.

Whole Organ Tissue Culture

Whole organs can be cultured ex vivo using specialized bioreactors with the goal of repairing or replacing entire organs. This method uses a donor organ that is stripped of all cells, leaving behind the three-dimensional structure, which is then repopulated with new cells. This video demonstrates the whole organ culture of lungs and shows how a dynamic culture that mimics the mechanical stimulation in the body is needed to induce native tissue properties.
