Particle Settling

Particle settling is the downward movement of suspended particles through a fluid under gravity, a process that helps characterize and separate biological materials. Its rate depends on particle size, density, and shape, as well as fluid viscosity; larger or denser particles generally settle faster in less viscous fluids. In biology, settling supports the separation of cells, organelles, microorganisms, and other suspended components during sample preparation and sedimentation assays. Understanding settling behavior also helps researchers interpret transport in blood, culture media, and natural aquatic systems, improving experimental design and the analysis of particle distributions.

This paper demonstrates the experimental procedure to measure terminal settling velocities of spherical particles in surfactant-based shear thinning viscoelastic fluids. Fluids over a wide range of rheological properties are prepared and settling velocities are measured for a range of particle sizes in unbounded fluids and fluids between parallel walls.

Determination of the Settling Rate of Clay/Cyanobacterial Floccules

The interaction and sedimentation of the clay and bacterial cells within the marine realm, observed in natural environments, can be best investigated in a controlled lab environment. Here, we describe a detailed protocol, which outlines a novel method for measuring the sedimentation rate of clay and cyanobacterial floccules.

Subatomic Particles

2020

Dalton was only partially correct about the particles that make up matter. All matter is composed of atoms, and atoms are composed of three smaller subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These three particles account for the mass and the charge of an atom. The Discovery of the Electron The first clue about the subatomic structure came at the end of the 19th century when J.J. Thomson discovered the electron using a cathode ray tube. This apparatus consisted of a sealed glass...
