Pericytes

Pericytes are contractile mural cells that surround the endothelial cells of capillaries and small venules, where they help regulate microvascular structure and function. Through direct contacts and signaling with endothelial cells, pericytes influence vessel stability, permeability, blood flow, and the formation of new vessels; their responses can include contraction and changes in cell behavior. In biology, studying pericytes clarifies how tissues maintain functional circulation and how the blood-brain barrier is supported. Pericyte loss or dysfunction is associated with impaired vascular integrity and abnormal angiogenesis, making these cells important in research on development, injury, cancer, and neurovascular disease.
