Plant Pigment Chromatography

Plant Pigment Chromatography is a separation technique used to identify and compare the colored compounds present in plant tissues, providing evidence that leaves contain multiple pigments rather than a single green substance. During the procedure, a solvent moves through paper or another stationary phase by capillary action, carrying pigments at different rates according to their solubility and attraction to the stationary material. This produces distinct bands, often including chlorophylls and carotenoids, whose migration can be compared using retention factor values. In biology, the method supports investigations of photosynthesis, pigment distribution, plant adaptation, and the relationship between pigment composition and light absorption.

From Water to Land Kingdom Plantae first appeared about 410 million years ago as green algae transitioned from water to land. Though challenging, this transition benefited early colonizers in several ways. Initially, most living organisms (including plants and animals) were ocean dwelling, making aquatic environments crowded and highly competitive. In contrast, land was a relatively uncolonized environment with ample resources and little to no predators or competitors. Terrestrial environments...

This work presents a method to quickly and precisely quantify the abdominal pigmentation of Drosophila melanogaster using digital image analysis. This method streamlines the procedures between phenotype acquisition and data analysis and includes specimen mounting, image acquisition, pixel value extraction, and trait measurement.

Photoreceptors and Plant Responses to Light

2020

Light plays a significant role in regulating the growth and development of plants. In addition to providing energy for photosynthesis, light provides other important cues to regulate a range of developmental and physiological responses in plants. What Is a Photoreceptor? Plants respond to light using a unique set of light-sensitive proteins called photoreceptors. Photoreceptors contain photopigments, which consist of a protein component bound to a non-protein, light-absorbing pigment called...

Transmitting Plant Viruses Using Whiteflies

Improving our understanding of and our ability to manage many of the insect-transmitted plant viruses requires the use of the vector. Insect transmission of plant viruses is a tritrophic interaction, and as such requires the manipulation of insects, virus, and plant. Vectors must be reared in large numbers and manipulated in such a way as to insure high rates of transmission to test plants. The basics of rearing and manipulating the whitefly, Bemisa tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a vector of...
