Primary Somatosensory Cortex

The primary somatosensory cortex is a region of the cerebral cortex that receives and processes sensory information about touch, pressure, pain, temperature, vibration, and body position. Located in the postcentral gyrus, it integrates signals relayed from sensory receptors through the spinal cord and thalamus, while its somatotopic organization represents different body regions in a structured cortical map. Studying this area helps explain how the brain constructs body awareness and distinguishes sensory features. Research on the primary somatosensory cortex also informs investigations of neural plasticity, sensory processing, neurological disorders, and recovery following brain injury.

The somatosensory cortex in the parietal lobes is crucial for interpreting sensory data such as touch, temperature, and proprioception. The somatosensory cortex, situated in the parietal lobes, plays a vital role in interpreting sensory information like touch, temperature, and proprioception—awareness of body position. This specialized brain region features an organized structure wherein neurons at the top primarily process sensations originating from the lower body. In contrast, those at the...
