Psii Absorption Cross-section

PSII absorption cross-section is the effective area that describes how efficiently a photosystem II complex captures photons at a given wavelength, making it a key measure of light harvesting in photosynthesis. It depends on the number and types of associated pigments, their wavelength-dependent absorption, and the transfer of excitation energy through antenna proteins to the PSII reaction center, where charge separation initiates electron transport and supports water oxidation. Researchers use this parameter to compare light-harvesting performance under different conditions, interpret chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic measurements, and assess how plants, algae, or cyanobacteria adjust to changing light environments.

Drug Absorption: Factors Affecting GI Absorption

2023

The process of oral drug absorption can be influenced by several factors. Weakly acidic drugs tend to be absorbed more readily from the stomach due to their nonionized state. However, absorption may be less efficient in the upper intestine, where drugs are often ionized. Interestingly, despite the stomach's apparent advantage for drug absorption, its mucous layer can hinder diffusion. Its surface area is also smaller than the intestine's, which can further slow down the absorption rate. In...

Genetic Crosses

To dissect genetic processes or create organisms with novel suites of traits, scientists can perform genetic crosses, or the purposeful mating of two organisms. The recombination of parental genetic material in the offspring allows researchers to deduce the functions, interactions, and locations of genes. This video will examine how genetic crosses were influential in developing Mendel's three laws of inheritance, which form the basis of our understanding of genetics. One genetic crossing...

Making a Geologic Cross Section

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder Geologic maps were first made and utilized in Europe, in the mid-to-late 18th century. Ever since, they have been an important part of geological investigations all around the world that strive to understand rock distributions on the surface of the earth, in the subsurface, and their modification through time. A modern geologic map is a data-rich representation of rocks and rock-structures in a two-dimensional plan view. The...

Cross-Sectional Research

In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Carbohydrate Absorption

2025

Carbohydrates are essential macronutrients that serve as the body's primary energy source. Their digestion begins in the mouth, where salivary amylase partially breaks down complex carbohydrates such as starch into smaller oligosaccharides. This mechanical and enzymatic activity prepares carbohydrates for further processing in the gastrointestinal tract. After being swallowed, the partially digested carbohydrates mix with gastric secretions in the stomach. However, the acidic environment...
