Insect Pest Management

Insect Pest Management is the science and practice of preventing, monitoring, and reducing insect populations that damage crops, stored products, structures, or public health while limiting harm to people and ecosystems. It works by combining surveillance and identification with interventions such as habitat modification, biological control, physical barriers, and carefully targeted insecticides, often guided by pest thresholds and life-cycle knowledge. In biology, these strategies help explain interactions among insects, hosts, predators, pathogens, and environments while supporting sustainable agriculture, conservation, and disease prevention. Effective management emphasizes integrated approaches that delay resistance, protect beneficial organisms, and reduce unnecessary pesticide use.

Flight in insects is influenced by a number of factors and the propensity to disperse is an important variable in understanding insect ecology and biological control strategies. We describe the construction and use of a simple, relatively inexpensive, and flexible flight mill for measuring parameters of tethered flight in insects.

The Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly) Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a worldwide pest of agriculture. A deeper understanding of its biology is key to control medfly populations and thus reduce economic impact. Embryo microinjection is a fundamental tool allowing both germ-line transformation and reverse genetics studies in this species.

Here we present a protocol based on the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor)-bait system that was used for isolating and selecting entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) from soil samples. An effective conidia number (ECN) formula is used to select high stress tolerant EPF based on physiological characteristics for pest microbial control in the field.
