Refrigeration

Refrigeration is the controlled removal of heat to maintain materials at temperatures below their surroundings, slowing physical, chemical, and biological change. In biological settings, refrigeration transfers heat from a storage chamber through a refrigerant cycle, while temperature regulation reduces molecular motion and limits enzyme activity, microbial growth, and cellular metabolism. Researchers use refrigeration to preserve cells, tissues, organisms, cultures, reagents, and biological samples during storage or transport. Proper temperature control helps maintain sample integrity and experimental reproducibility, although refrigeration does not stop all degradation and may not protect materials that are sensitive to cold-induced damage.

2023

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Christopher J Greer; Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA This experiment demonstrates the principles of vapor compression refrigeration. The vapor compression cycle is the dominant refrigeration technology, found in most refrigerators, freezers, air-conditioning systems, and heat pumps. In this cycle, cooling (heat acquisition) is achieved with low-pressure evaporation of refrigerant. Thermal...

2017

With solar energy as the driving force, a novel adsorption refrigeration system has been developed and experimentally investigated. Water vapor and zeolite formed the working pair of the adsorption system. This manuscript describes the setup of the experimental rig, the operation procedure, and the important results.

Refrigerators and Heat Pumps

2023

Refrigerators or heat pumps are heat engines operating in a reverse direction. For a refrigerator, the focus is on removing heat from a specific area, whereas, for a heat pump, the focus is on dumping heat into one particular area. A refrigerator (or heat pump) absorbs heat Qc from the cold reservoir at Kelvin temperature Tc and discards heat Qh to the hot reservoir at Kelvin temperature Th, while work W is done on the engine’s working substance. A household refrigerator removes heat from the...
