Regeneration Assessment

Regeneration assessment is the systematic evaluation of how effectively an organism, tissue, or cell population restores lost structure and function after damage, providing a framework for comparing biological repair outcomes. Researchers establish the extent of injury, monitor regrowth over time, and compare structural organization with the return of function to distinguish complete regeneration from incomplete repair or scarring. Applied in developmental, cellular, and organismal biology, this approach helps identify the cells, signals, and environmental conditions that influence recovery. It also supports studies of disease mechanisms and the development of strategies to improve tissue restoration.

Assessment of Vascular Regeneration in the CNS Using the Mouse Retina

2014

The rodent retina has long been recognized as an accessible window to the brain. In this technical paper we provide a protocol that employs the mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy to study the mechanisms that lead to failure of vascular regeneration within the central nervous system after ischemic injury. The described system can also be harnessed to explore strategies to promote regrowth of functional blood vessels within the retina and CNS.

Electrophysiological Recordings For Assessing Neuronal Regenerations in Co-cultured Spinal Cord Slices

2025

This video presents electrophysiological recordings from organotypic co-cultures of spinal cord slices, captured using a multi-electrode array or MEA device. These recordings assess neuronal regeneration between the slices. The synchronized electrical activity observed confirms successful neural regeneration.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...

A System for Culturing Iris Pigment Epithelial Cells to Study Lens Regeneration in Newt

2011

In newt, the lens regenerates always from the dorsal iris by transdifferentiation of the iris pigmented epithelial cells (IPEs). Here we describe a procedure to culture dorsal and ventral newt IPE cells and their implantation to the newt eye. The implanted cells are then studied by tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry.
