Respiratory Disease Models

Respiratory disease models are experimental systems that reproduce key features of disorders affecting the airways, lungs, or respiratory function, enabling researchers to study disease mechanisms under controlled conditions. These models may use cultured airway or lung cells, organoids, tissue samples, animals, or computational simulations to examine processes such as inflammation, infection, epithelial injury, fibrosis, and impaired gas exchange. In biology, they support investigation of how genetic, environmental, and infectious factors alter respiratory tissues and responses. Respiratory disease models also help evaluate potential drugs, vaccines, and other interventions while reducing reliance on direct human experimentation and guiding the development of more predictive research methods.

2026

Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a widespread pathogen that primarily targets infants and young children but also poses a serious health risk to elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Belonging to the Pneumoviridae family, RSV is a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus within the Pneumovirus genus. Its global health burden is significant, with millions of cases annually resulting in hospitalizations and mortality, particularly in resource-limited settings. Although most...

Machine Learning-Based Cough Tone Classification: Diagnostic Exploration of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Respiratory Tract Infections

2025

This study effectively accomplished the automated classification of two distinct categories by acquiring cough sound data from patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory tract infections (RTI), utilizing an integration of speech signal processing techniques and machine learning algorithms.

The most obvious visible clue to a respiratory problem will be whether the patient is displaying any signs of respiratory distress, such as fast respiratory rate and/or cyanosis. In a clinical situation, this will always require...
