Section Sampling Fraction

Section sampling fraction is the proportion of tissue sections selected for analysis from a complete series, a sampling parameter used to estimate biological structures efficiently without examining every section. In stereological studies, researchers establish a systematic, often randomly initiated interval, such as analyzing every tenth section, and calculate the fraction as sampled sections divided by total sections in the series. Combined with other sampling fractions and counting rules, this measure supports unbiased estimates of cell number, tissue volume, and lesion burden from histological sections, helping researchers balance statistical precision, workload, and tissue preservation.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater — University of Connecticut Distillation is perhaps the most common laboratory technique employed by chemists for the purification of organic liquids. Compounds in a mixture with different boiling points separate into individual components when the mixture is carefully distilled. The two main types of distillation are "simple distillation" and "fractional distillation", and both are widely used in organic chemistry laboratories. Simple distillation...
