Spheroid Imaging Device

A spheroid imaging device is an instrument designed to visualize and analyze three-dimensional aggregates of cells, which model tissue organization more realistically than many two-dimensional cultures. The device uses controlled illumination and image capture to record spheroid features such as size, shape, internal structure, and changes over time, with fluorescent markers added when specific cell states or viability need to be assessed. In biology, these measurements support studies of cell growth, differentiation, organization, and responses to treatments. By enabling consistent, non-destructive monitoring, spheroid imaging helps researchers evaluate tissue-like models and compare biological outcomes across experimental conditions.

2025

This article describes a protocol for mechanical characterisation of living spheroids within a 3D matrix using Brillouin micro-spectroscopy. This all-optical method enables spheroid visualisation with microscale resolution and quantitative mechanical properties. This approach has implications for mechanical phenotyping; for instance, determining pathological states of tumor spheroids within a 3D microenvironment.
