Spore Survival Assay

A spore survival assay is an experimental method for measuring how many spores remain viable after exposure to defined environmental conditions or treatments. In a typical assay, spores undergo controlled stress, such as heat, desiccation, chemicals, or radiation, and researchers then assess survival by allowing recovery and germination or by counting colonies formed from surviving spores. These measurements reveal spore resistance, persistence, and the factors that influence viability. In biology, spore survival assays support studies of microbial ecology, environmental adaptation, sterilization methods, contamination control, and the mechanisms that enable dormant cells to withstand unfavorable conditions.

2023

This video introduces a short-term survival assay that tests a treatment for acute toxicity or tests a genetic strain for resistance to a toxic condition. The example protocol shows an example survival assay in which worms are tested for their ability to resist oxidative stress induced by paraquat (PQ).
