Structural Parameters

Structural parameters are measurable features that describe the size, shape, organization, and spatial relationships of biological structures. In biology, researchers obtain these parameters by examining specimens with microscopy, imaging, or three-dimensional reconstruction and quantifying characteristics such as length, area, volume, geometry, and the arrangement of components. These measurements convert qualitative observations into comparable data, helping investigators characterize cells, tissues, organs, and organisms across developmental stages or experimental conditions. Structural parameters support studies of morphology, growth, disease-related changes, and cellular organization, while also providing quantitative inputs for modeling biological systems and evaluating how structure relates to function.

Wave Parameters

2023

The simplest mechanical waves are associated with simple harmonic motion and repeat themselves for several cycles. These simple harmonic waves can be modeled using a combination of sine and cosine functions. Consider a simplified surface water wave that moves across the water's surface. Unlike complex ocean waves, in surface water waves, water moves vertically, oscillating up and down, whereas the disturbance of the wave moves horizontally through the medium. If a seagull is floating on the...

The NMR-solution structure of a metallochaperone model peptide with Cu (I) was determined, and a detailed protocol from sample preparation and 1D and 2D data collection to a three-dimensional structure is described.

Distributions to Estimate Population Parameter

2025

The accurate values of population parameters such as population proportion, population mean, and population standard deviation (or variance) are usually unknown. These are fixed values that can only be estimated from the data collected from the samples. The estimates of each of these parameters are sample proportion, the sample mean, and sample standard deviation (or variance). To obtain the values of these sample statistics, data are required that have particular distribution and central...

We describe a correlative microscopy method that combines high-speed 3D live-cell fluorescent light microscopy and high-resolution cryo-electron tomography. We demonstrate the capability of the correlative method by imaging dynamic, small HIV-1 particles interacting with host HeLa cells.

2011

Electrospinning techniques can create a variety of nanofibrous scaffolds for tissue engineering or other applications. We describe here a procedure to optimize the parameters of the electrospinning solution and apparatus to obtain fibers with the desired morphology and alignment. Common problems and troubleshooting techniques are also presented.
