Tail Fin Sampling

Tail fin sampling is a minimally invasive biological technique that removes a small portion of a fish’s caudal fin for genetic, molecular, or physiological analysis while preserving the animal for continued study. During the procedure, researchers collect fin tissue under appropriate handling conditions, extract genomic DNA, and use methods such as PCR or sequencing to identify genotypes, mutations, or genetic markers. Because fins can regenerate, the same fish may be followed over time, supporting longitudinal experiments in zebrafish and other research species. The method aids breeding programs, transgenic line screening, developmental studies, and investigations of regeneration while reducing the need to sacrifice animals.
