Tim22 Translocase

The Tim22 translocase is a protein-import complex in the mitochondrial inner membrane that recognizes and inserts carrier proteins needed for organelle metabolism. Newly synthesized carrier proteins cross the outer membrane, bind small Tim chaperones in the intermembrane space, and are delivered to the Tim22 channel, where membrane-potential-dependent insertion places their transmembrane segments into the inner membrane. Studying this pathway clarifies mitochondrial protein biogenesis, membrane organization, and energy production, while providing a framework for investigating how defects in mitochondrial import can impair cellular function and contribute to disease.
